Rugby: Three-try Timlin secures Ballina victory for U-17s

RUGBY – U-17 challenge
CASTLEBAR 0 BALLINA 26

BALLINA recorded a highly impressive victory over their Mayo rivals in an U-17 meeting recently.

From the start of the game the Greens attacked the Castlebar team with straight direct running and passing through the hands of the forwards. This gave quick ball to the backs which enabled them to find the gaps and gain good ground.

After eleven minutes of play Ballina had a line-out in Castle-bar’s half. From the lineout, quick ball was given to the backs and this gave room for Shane Timlin to score the first of three tries. The conversion was added by Timlin.

Ballina were able to continue in the same form and create opportunities throughout the game.

Fithteen minutes into the game another line-out was won by the forwards, quick ball once again went to the backs and Shane Timlin cut back inside towards the forwards and was able to find the gap to score his second try. The conversion was added by Michael Allan.

Ballina’s confidence was starting to grow and from a scrum inside the Castlebar half Kevin Doherty picked the ball up from the back of the scrum, passed to Ian Jennings who put Eaghan Bonner away for his first Ballina try. The conversion was missed.

Ballina started the second half as they did the first, attacking the Castlebar line.

Eleven minutes into the second half Ballina backs hoisted a high ball into the opposition half and with good pressure from the backs forced Castlebar into a drop ball and this enabled Shane Timlin to pick up and score his third try of the game.

Timlin slotted the conversion. This was the last score of the game and both teams played out the rest of the game on an even keel.

Once again the performance was down to an excellent squad effort.

 U13 Creggs v BRFC (8:5)

Ballina U13′s second game in the Connacht Northern Dvision League took place in Creggs in very poor conditions on Saturday, 7th November. Both teams had to contend with a waterlogged pitch and a very long playing surface. Once again a strong squad of 22 players travelled to represent Ballina on the day.

The game was played in 3×20 minutes blocks. Ballina started sluggishly and an early penalty under the posts for Creggs was followed by a try in a first period where Ballina rarely challenged. However Ballina responded well in the second period, the pack retained and recycled possession very well and made solid progress driving forward, led by Gary Kavanagh. A fine second period was capped with a slick backline move from Ballina’s own half that was finished with a  50 metre run by Joe Murphy to score a well deserved try. Creggs did get to the try line once in this period but an excellent tackle by Cormac Reape at full-back resulted in the Creggs player spilling the ball.

In the third period Ballina controlled the play – it was dominated by the Ballina forwards being camped for a good 10 minutes at the Creggs line and despite getting over the line on a number of occasions, could not convince the referee that the ball had been grounded.

Overall the team performed well in atrocious conditions and is building good momentum.

 Ballina Squad: C Reape, J O’Hora, D Molloy, J Murphy, Cian Barrins, D Whyte, C Gilvarry, R Molloy, R Stephens, M O’Dowd, D Gavin, R Maidment, J O’Hara, G Jones, G Kavanagh, C Brown, J Irwin, B O’Hara, D Kenny, T Greham, M Sheridan, C Moyles
